THE TRADITION

Trametes versicolor

Turkey Tail is named for the concentric rings of colour that fan out across its surface, browns, tans, creams and greys that do indeed recall the spread tail of a wild turkey. It is one of the most common and widely distributed medicinal mushrooms in the world, found growing on fallen logs and tree stumps across forests in Europe, Asia and North America. Its abundance, far from diminishing its reputation, seems only to have deepened it. Generations of practitioners across multiple cultures looked at Turkey Tail and reached the same conclusion: here was something quietly but consistently powerful.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Turkey Tail (known as Yun Zhi, or Cloud Mushroom) has been used for over two thousand years. It was prescribed to support the lungs and spleen, to clear what practitioners called dampness and heat from the body, and to support the body’s vital energy and immune resilience. It appeared in the Compendium of Materia Medica, the great 16th century Chinese medical encyclopaedia, and has remained in continuous use in traditional practice ever since.

In Japan, where it is known as Kawaratake, Turkey Tail has been the subject of more formal research than perhaps any other medicinal mushroom. Japanese scientists in the 1970s identified two key polysaccharides, PSK and PSP, which have been studied extensively for their potential to support immune function. PSK has been used alongside conventional medical treatment in Japan for decades.

Native American traditions also made use of Turkey Tail. The Ojibwe people brewed it as a tea to support general health and recovery. Other indigenous groups used it in similar ways, as a steady, reliable support for the body’s own defences rather than a treatment for specific conditions.

What connects all of these traditions, separated by centuries and continents, is the same underlying observation: Turkey Tail supports the body’s capacity to protect and regulate itself. Not loudly, not dramatically, but reliably, and over time.
