THE TRADITION

Cordyceps militaris

The story of Cordyceps begins at altitude. Tibetan herders noticed centuries ago that their yaks grazed on a strange, finger-like fungus growing from the grasslands of the high Himalayas and returned noticeably stronger, more energetic and more capable of sustained effort. The herders tried it themselves. The results were the same. Word spread slowly, the way knowledge spreads through mountain communities, and Cordyceps became one of the most prized substances in Tibetan and Chinese medicine.

In traditional Tibetan medicine it was used to restore vitality after illness, to support endurance at altitude and to help the lungs and kidneys work more efficiently in thin mountain air. Practitioners prescribed it for exhaustion, breathlessness and what they described as a depletion of yang energy, the warm, active force associated with physical vitality and drive.

In Chinese medicine, Cordyceps was documented in the Ben Cao Bei Yao, an 18th century pharmacopoeia, and had been used in practice long before that. It was prescribed for chronic fatigue, low libido, respiratory weakness and recovery from prolonged illness. Like Reishi, it was considered a superior tonic, safe for extended use, supportive of the whole system and working best over time rather than in a single dose.

Cordyceps contains compounds including cordycepin and adenosine, which have attracted significant scientific interest for their potential effects on cellular energy production, oxygen utilisation and physical performance. Research has explored its possible role in supporting ATP synthesis (the body’s fundamental energy currency) as well as its potential effects on respiratory function and endurance.

What has always distinguished Cordyceps from stimulants is the quality of the energy it is associated with. Not a spike, not a jolt, but a deeper and steadier kind of vitality, more reserves, more capacity, more ability to sustain effort without the crash that follows artificial stimulation.
